In this age of fluidity, we need fashion that reflects our personal choices, and the crop top is arguably the most versatile piece of clothing that will ever exist. Look up “cute–sexy dichotomy” in the dictionary, for instance, and you’ll find an image of pop princess Britney Spears in her iconic “…Baby One More Time” schoolgirl outfit, circa 1998—sleeves rolled up and shirt knotted just below her bust, busting that false dichotomy in style.

Since its revival a few years back, the crop top has made it clear that it’s here to stay. You’ve seen the photos: everyone who’s anyone, from Rihanna and Beyoncé of the holy-grail mononymous (single-name) club to newer It Girls Bella and Gigi Hadid, knows just how to rock a crop top—and honestly, so can you!

Don’t roll your eyes, now. Sure, most of us can’t flaunt the same tight, toned abs they do, but a well-styled crop top can look good on anyone, of literally any body shape and size—and I don’t mean that figuratively. It’s the wardrobe staple you didn’t know you needed, and these five tips will help you learn just how to take full advantage of all that amazing adaptability.

1. It’s not just skin-deep

  • Showing an expanse of skin is not a must
  • You can pair it with high-waisted bottoms
  • A peek of skin, of course, can be sexy and flattering, but it all depends on what you’re comfortable with

2. Pick your poison

  • For the office: a high-waisted midi skirt and pumps
  • For a casual day/night out: jeans or overalls
  • At the beach/festival: shorts
  • At a fancy dinner: a skirt or sheer dress over
  • Also, you can always dress your outfit up or down with accessories and shoes

3. If you’ve got it, flaunt it

  • To hide the tummy: go for the area of skin just below the bra, a short crop and high-waisted bottom should do
  • To show off abs: low-rise bottom, choose a longer crop if you don’t want to show too much skin
  • To accentuate the waist: a mid-length crop and high-waisted bottom so they meet at your waistline gives the waist more definition so you look slimmer

4. Balance, balance, balance

  • A general rule is to strike a balance between the top and bottom
  • If the top is tight and body-hugging, go for a flared bottom; if the top is loose and flowy, pick a more fitting bottom instead
  • When both are tight-fitting, it can look obscene and inappropriate
  • When both are loose and drapey, the lines and curves of your body are left undefined and it can make you look shapeless

5. Remember: Fluidity

  • But most importantly, there are no real rules: in fact, any top can work as a crop top (by tying it up à la Britney)
  • A tight outfit can be suitable for a night out; a loose outfit can look good with slits in the pants/skirt if one or the other is sheer
  • As long as you feel good, you’ll look good
